This morning as I was getting ready to start my day, I found myself in need of a little inspiration, I put on an interesting TED Talks video. The topic was “Why do Some Students Fail and Other Students Succeed?” I found the video quite interesting as this is a question I find myself pondering over quite often. Why do some students struggle in the classroom and/or student salon?
As a matter of fact, I found this video so interesting that I had a conversation about it with Lisha Barnes, Milady Academic Development Manager. She had mentioned that she also viewed the video and shared it in a previous blog post a few months back. The theory of “gritty” was so intriguing I decided to share this video with you again, just in case you missed Lisha’s previous blog.
The presenter Angela Lee Duckworth, a teacher turned psychologist, reveals what factors determine whether a student will succeed or fail. Her theory is based off ones “grittiness.” She explains that one’s success is not necessarily based off their IQ, family income, or other factors, it is based on their “grittiness.”
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did, it certainly woke me up and got me to start thinking outside the box in relations to student’s successes and failures. The video even had me thinking about my own personal level of “gritty.” Keep your eyes open for my next blog on ways we can build our “grit.”
