Can you believe that in just a few short months it will be
the year 2020?
2020… is that really possible?
2020… it doesn’t seem like a real year; it seems something
out of a science fiction movie.
2020… it just sounds weird… right?
Think about it this way…
- 2010 was 10 years ago! We are entering a new
decade.
- The Roaring 20’s was 100 years ago.
- The Super 70s was 50 years ago.
- It’s been 38 years since Prince told us to party
like it was 1999, which at the time seemed so far away, and now it’s been 20
years since we did party in 1999.
I wonder how many students would even have a clue what I
mean by some of these?
So why are we talking about this?
Well, I think there is a lot of fun to have in our
classrooms and our student salons as we bring in 2020. We are always looking for new and fun ways to
bring different things into our school.
I think 2020 is the perfect time to celebrate the past and make learning
some techniques like Fingerwaving more interesting and fun.
You can plan a fun project for each month of the year.
Here are a few ideas for you:
- Have a new year’s celebration with your students
and pick a day in January to have a Roaring 20’s Party at the school. Encourage students to dress up in costumes,
hair, and makeup. Play flapper music in
the student salon.
- Hold a Roaring 20’s Competition. Partner up a cosmetology student, an
esthetician student and a nail tech student.
Have each group research hair, skin and nails from the 1920’s and have a
contest. Let’s make Fingerwaves
fun!
- Have another competition, this time embracing
the style and trends of the 1970’s. Remind
students that despite all that long straight hair, they didn’t have flatirons
in the 70’s! Make it a no flatirons
allowed competition.
- Prince’s 1999 was released in 1982. Let’s have another competition, this time
focused on the trends of 1982. Let’s see
some big hair! Of course, don’t forget
to play nothing but 80’s music that day!
Be sure to play some Rick Springfield for me!
- After you have celebrated partying like it was
1999, have students then go and research 1999 and have a competition based on
styles from 1999.
- Something specific for your nail techs,
celebrate the 20’s by having them create a moon manicure. The moon manicure was all the rage in the
1920’s when it gained popularity when silent movie stars wore the fashion on
screen. In the 1920’s, the moon manicure
was when the lunula and the tip were left bare.
- Hold a futuristic competition. Have students envision what hair, makeup and
nails might be in another 100 years.
What will be the trends of 2120?
I’ve suggested making all these activities
competitions, but you can turn them in to a research project as well and simply
have students’ study, research and create a look based on each idea.
Here is to a productive 2020!
