My friend and fellow educator, Ida McLean from Searcy Beauty College, shared this game with me recently. I thought it sounded like a wonderful game for you to implement for your review sessions.
To set up the game, make a list of terms from the chapter you are reviewing. Print out each word on a separate sheet of 8×10 color paper. White paper works too, color just makes it more fun! Make the font as large as possible so the term fills the entire sheet of paper. Place each sheet in a sheet protector so you will be able to save them and use them again. Make sure to have a minimum of 40 to 50 different terms (it would be fine to use terms from different chapters as distractors if there are not enough terms in your specific review chapter). Next, randomly tape the terms on your classroom wall. Be sure to use masking tape so you don’t damage the wall. Then, place a line in front of the wall facing the terms and add chairs for team members to sit in during the game. You will also need two fly swatters (or something similar), preferably brand new!
Divide the students into two groups (if you have a large class you might want to divide into three teams). Have the first person from each team take their place behind the line with their back to the wall while holding the fly swatter. You will then ask a review question and say “go.” The students behind the line can then turn around and try to find the correct answer on the wall. The first student to run to the correct answer on the wall and slap it with their fly swatter will win a point for their team. The rest of their team can help by shouting out answers. The challenge is trying to find it in the sea of words that are posted on the wall and then get to it before the other team. After the correct answer is identified, have the next person on each team take their place behind the line and continue with more questions. The team with the most points at the end of the review, wins!
This is just a fun way to liven up your chapter reviews. Remember to change it up. Don’t do this game with every chapter because it will get tiresome after a while. If you break it out every now and then, students will have a blast.
