Have you ever told a story in your classroom?  A story of that crazy client request or that time when you were able to correct the most hideous home haircolor?  What are your students’ reactions when you start to share a story?  Do they perk up and become engaged?  Absolutely!  Everyone loves a great story.

Storytelling is one of the greatest teaching methods we can incorporate into the classroom.  We weave stories in and out of our lesson content to bring the information to life and relate it to the real world.  The challenge we have as educators is finding the right balance between delivering content and sharing stories.  Wouldn’t it be great if there was something out there that provided that for you?  Something that told a story to engage the student but then provide the curriculum content needed for success?

Well, there is! Studio Luma: Scenarios for Salon-Ready Professionals is a DVD series that follows the Studio Luma Salon, the owner, Silvie, and stylists Brad, Viv, Alice and Maya.  There are 48 episodes where stylists perform cutting, color and texture services on clients while problem solving challenges and striving for success.  Every episode shows a technical procedure and explores the important theory topics related to each service as well as takes a look at the soft skills required to be successful.

All of this content is wrapped up in a television type of storytelling, giving students the opportunity to understand the importance of everything they are learning and how it all comes together in the salon. It is easy to implement into your existing cosmetology curriculum.  Simply show one or two episodes a week through the duration of your program, implement a specific episode into your schedule based on what you are covering that week, or simply allow students to watch the series during their downtime each week in the student salon.
