Last week I was in a school and heard a big cheer come from outside the office I was in. When I asked what was going on, they told me that a student was clocking out on her last hour of school and the students were there to celebrate. I loved it!
All the students came and gathered around the time clock and when she clocked out, they cheered and celebrated her. And rightfully so. It was the end of a year-long commitment. The end of one journey and the beginning of the next. It is something that we should be cheering!
Back when I was in the school full time, I didn’t do a very good job on this one. I let the busyness of the day and running a school get in my way of celebrating students finishing their hours.
There was always something important to be done, paperwork to finish, exit counseling to complete, making sure I had all the information I needed from the student and on and on and on.
I wish I could go back and change it. I would love to be standing at the time clock when they clocked that final minute. Stand there and cheer and toss confetti! Be there and celebrate the accomplishment of each student.
How about you? What do you do to celebrate that moment when students complete school?
